The Bus Ride (pages 65-76)
Part two of my attempt to score my novel Husk using other people’s music, as I have no musical capabilities whatsoever.
There’s actually two bus trips in Husk, I’ll get to the other one (with a major death scene!) soon. Right now, I want to talk of Sheldon’s uncertain voyage sur l’autobus to an audition. This chapter finds Sheldon tremendously off-balance. He hasn’t yet truly come to grips with his new position as walking corpse. As the bus trundles along, he starts to wonder if, since he’s proof that zombies exist, other monsters might also be lurking around. Is that goth kid a vampire of some kind? Is the hirsute bus driver really a partially shaven Sasquatch? Could that old woman possibly be an Old One? For Sheldon, it’s an odd and unsettling trip through the streets of Toronto, made all the worse when he inadvertently tries to bite his seatmate. Marco Beltrami’s “B.P.R.D.” from Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy does the trick for me here. While most of the score is along the lines of your more-typical superhero slam-bang bombast (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the theme to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development is off-centred, quiet, leisurely, and just a bit playful. It’s a piece that recognizes that the world is a strange place sometimes, and all you can do is go with it. Perfect music to sit and wonder whether that guy staring at you is a werewolf by.
